The White Snake
Annotations Enabled
A king had a servant who was so faithful that the king entrusted him with the task of tasting his food before he ate. One day, the king was served a dish covered by a white cloth. When the servant lifted it, he found a white snake and tasted it. Immediately, he could understand the language of animals.
He overheard his horse complaining about the burden it carried, and to help, he removed a heavy log from the path. The animals he helped were grateful and promised to repay him. But when the king learned of the servant's gift, he feared treachery and banished him from the kingdom.
The servant set out into the world, using his ability to understand animals. He helped fish trapped in a net, and they promised to aid him. He saved ants from drowning, and they swore to remember his kindness. He freed ravens whose nestlings were endangered, and they pledged their support.
Eventually, he came to a kingdom where a princess was promised to anyone who could complete an impossible task: finding a ring she had dropped in the deep ocean. The servant asked his fish friends for help, and they returned the ring easily. But the king set another task: to eat a mountain of bread. The servant's ant allies consumed it all in one night.
The final task was to bring back the most beautiful woman in the world. The ravens carried the servant to a castle beyond the sea, where the most beautiful woman slept. But the servant refused to take her against her will. Impressed by his honor, she chose to go with him willingly.
When they returned, the king was furious and planned to execute the servant. But the young woman revealed she was the servant's true love, and with the help of his animal allies, the servant defeated the king and won the throne.
He ruled wisely, using his gift to understand all creatures, and never forgot that kindness to even the smallest beings could change a destiny.
