Thor, the god of thunder, and Loki, the god of mischief, set out on a journey to Utgard, the stronghold of the giants. Along the way, they met a giant named Skrymir, and spent the night in his enormous glove, Thor tried to kill the sleeping giant by striking his head with Mjolnir three times, but each blow only caused the giant to murmur that a leaf, an acorn, and a twig had fallen on him. When they arrived at Utgard, the king Utgard-Loki challenged them to contests. Loki was defeated in an eating contest against Logi, who was actually wildfire disguised as a man. Thialfi, Thor's servant, lost a footrace against Hugi, who was actually thought itself. Thor was then challenged to empty a drinking horn, but no matter how deeply he drank, the horn barely emptied. The horn was secretly connected to the ocean itself. Next, Thor was challenged to lift a cat from the floor, but could only manage to lift one paw. The cat was the Midgard Serpent, Jormungandr, in disguise. Finally, Thor wrestled an old woman named Elli and was forced to one knee. Elli was Old Age itself, which no one can defeat. Utgard-Loki then revealed the illusions and admitted that Thor's feats were extraordinary. Thor had lowered the ocean, nearly lifted the world serpent, and fought time itself. The giant then vanished along with his stronghold, for no giant wished to face Thor's wrath once the truth was known.
