The Bremen Town Musicians
A donkey who had served his master loyally for many years was growing old and weak. His master decided to get rid of him, so the donkey ran away and set off for Bremen to become a town musician. On the road he met an old hound, a cat past her prime, and a rooster destined for the soup pot. Each one joined him on the journey.
That night they found a cottage occupied by robbers. The four animals stood on each other's backs and made a terrible racket all at once. The robbers fled in terror, convinced the house was haunted, and the animals moved in and lived happily together.

I love how this variant emphasizes the role of the magical helper. It's so different from the version I grew up with!
The ATU 510A classification really helps in seeing the structural similarities with Ye Xian. Fascinating stuff.
